Troubleshoot Wifi Settings on a Mac Computer

1. Restart Devices

  • Restart your Mac and Wi-Fi router to refresh network settings and IP assignments. 

2. Check Wi-Fi Status

  • Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar to ensure Wi-Fi is turned on.
  • If it’s off, turn it on and try reconnecting.

3. Use Wireless Diagnostics

  • Hold the Option key and click the Wi-Fi icon.
  • Select Open Wireless Diagnostics and follow the prompts to analyze your connection.

4. Forget and Reconnect to Network

  • Go to System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi.
  • Click Details next to your network and choose Forget This Network.
  • Reconnect by entering the password.

5. Renew DHCP Lease

  • In System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi, click Details.
  • Under TCP/IP, click Renew DHCP Lease to refresh your IP address. 

6. Create a New Network Location

  • Go to System Settings > Network.
  • Click the Location dropdown > Edit Locations > + to create a new one.
  • Apply and test the new location.

7. Reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC

  • Shut down your Mac.
  • Turn it on and immediately press Option + Command + P + R for 20 seconds.
  • For Intel Macs, reset the SMC by following Apple’s instructions. 

8. Update macOS and Security Software

  • Go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Install any available updates for macOS and third-party security apps. 

9. Check Router and ISP

  • Ensure your router firmware is up to date.
  • Try connecting to a different network to rule out ISP issues.
