Chromebook Audio Not Working

Question/Issue

Why is there no sound coming from my Chromebook’s speakers or headphones?

Environment

  • Chromebook

Cause

Audio output may be disabled due to incorrect settings, muted volume, or outdated/corrupted audio drivers.

Resolution

  • Check the volume level:
    • Click the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
    • Ensure the volume slider is turned up and not muted.
  • Verify the correct audio output:
    • Click the audio settings and confirm the correct output device (speakers or headphones) is selected.
    • If using headphones, unplug and re-plug them to ensure a proper connection.
  • Restart the Chromebook to clear temporary glitches.
  • Reinstall or update audio drivers:
    • Open Settings > About Chrome OS.
    • Click “Check for updates” and install any available updates.
    • Restart the Chromebook after updating.
  • Test audio in multiple apps (e.g., YouTube, system sounds) to rule out app-specific issues.
  • If audio is still not working, perform a hard reset:
    • Turn off the Chromebook.
    • Press and hold the Refresh key (⟳) and tap the Power button.
    • Release both keys when the Chromebook starts.
